For an attached garage in Massachusetts, an insulated garage door is almost always worth it. In our 2026 price book, stepping up from a single-layer steel door to an insulated door in the same collection adds $212 to $957 on a single-car door and $452 to $1,647 on a double, depending on how far up you go. For a detached garage you do not heat, the case is weaker: what you gain is mostly a stiffer, quieter door.

What the insulation actually is:

A single-layer door is one skin of steel. A double-layer door adds a vinyl-backed polystyrene board (R-6.64 in the Amarr doors we install). A triple-layer door sandwiches foam between two steel skins: polystyrene (R-6.48 to R-9.05) or polyurethane (R-13.35 to R-14.46). Polyurethane is denser, insulates better for the same thickness and makes the panel more rigid.

What you get:

1. A warmer garage and a warmer wall. With an attached garage, the door is the largest uninsulated surface next to your living space. An insulated door keeps more of the cold out of the garage, the shared wall and any room above it.

2. Quieter operation. Two steel skins with foam between them damp vibration. The door rattles less on the way up and down, which matters for early departures and late returns.

3. A stiffer door. The foam core reinforces the panel, so it resists dents from a basketball or a bike and is less prone to sagging with age than a single skin of steel.

What you give up:

A little more weight per panel. We size the springs to the door, so this is accounted for at install.

A higher price: $212 to $957 on a single door, $452 to $1,647 on a double.

That is all. Insulated doors look the same from the street.

Which level for which garage:

Detached and unheated: single-layer or double-layer is fine.

Attached, unheated: a triple-layer polystyrene door or better.

Heated, finished, or with a room above: polyurethane, R-13.35 to R-14.46, the highest-rated steel doors we install.

The honest counter-case: if you are replacing a door on a fully detached, never-heated garage that you only park in, the extra money buys you little. A single-layer steel door runs $1,678 to $2,395 installed for a single-car opening and does the job.
